Yaron Matras is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Manchester and leads the university's Multilingual Manchester research unit. His research specialisms include bilingualism and language policy, and varieties of Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish, Romani, and other languages.
Manchester is one of the UK's most linguistically diverse cities. The session introduces the languages of Manchester's Muslim populations, covering the languages' backgrounds such as country of origin, script, status and relations to other languages. It will also cover their presence in Manchester's neighbourhoods, public spaces and institutions, as well as targeted language provisions.
